Tips to Grow Your Referral Network

Whether you're in private practice or working in a larger setting, building a referral network is one of the most valuable things you can do to connect with your ideal clients — and serve your community better.

At Grow Beyond Therapy Collective, we recently hosted a deep-dive discussion on this very topic. Here's a condensed version of what we shared with members.

1. Send Introduction Emails — and Then Follow Up

Reach out to providers, even if you’re unsure of the overlap. Let them know who you are and how you support your clients. Bonus points for including a short flier or website link.

2. Think Outside the Box

Your ideal clients aren’t always in medical offices. Where do they spend time?

  • Daycares

  • Senior centers

  • Schools

  • Parks and rec events

  • Family Facebook groups
These are great places to connect and offer value.

3. Show Up Authentically at Events

Start by attending local events as a participant before applying for a booth. Build relationships first — the trust comes naturally.

4. Build an Email List

Social media has its place, but your email list is where deeper connection and conversion happens. Consider a simple opt-in, like a free resource or event registration.

5. Remember: You Don’t Need a Physician’s Referral in Wisconsin

Wisconsin has direct access to occupational therapy services, meaning clients can come to you directly. Still, remind them to check their insurance plans for referral or diagnosis code requirements.

📖 Book Recommendation:
Thriving as a Therapist by Megan Gunnell, LMSW — a thoughtful, encouraging guide to building a practice rooted in your values.
